I suddenly realized that out there was another kind of news.

Behind The Nation Institute's, there really is a Tom—Tom Engelhardt. What started as a tangential branch of his regular investigative writing career eventually morphed into the site it is today—a site that has welcomed contributions from high-profile names like Bill McKibben, Rebecca Solnit, Noam Chomsky and others.

Engelhardt remains a Fellow at The Nation Institute and continues to write books, most recently The United States of Fear, and The American Way of War: How Bush's Wars Became Obama’s.

Additionally, Engelhardt co-founded the American Empire Project and teaches at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley.

Other Journalists

We don't have state media in the United States. But if we had it. how would it be any different?
The media has spent decades turning the news into a consumer business.
Good journalism today has the state in its crosshairs.
If you want to be a truth teller, you’re going to be a liability to the mainstream press.
